The “heather mountain” as the Lyngberget is called in Norwegian, is situated east of Kirkenes and from its top you have one of the most beautiful views over the town. On top of the mountain, there is a transmitter mast which is a good orientation point. And due to this mast, a broad way is leading up to the top so that it is easy to go up the mountain all year-round. I use this way quite often for an evening walk with my dogs. And I think the top of Lyngberget is also the best place in summer time to see the midnight sun.

It is only two-and-a-half kilometres from the start to the mountain top and a broad gravel path is going up to the top. After the first short uphill you can already see the mast on the top of the mountain.

You reach the first view point after only one third of the way. There you find a table with benches. Since the light conditions are very good today, I take a short brake and take some pictures.

When I finished taking pictures, I turned around just to discover some totally new behaviour of Taiga. At home, none of my dogs goes on the table, at least not as long as I’m at home. So I started wondering what my dogs are really doing when I’m not at home.

It is almost midnight when I reach the top of the mountain and this time it was really worth it coming up here. It is calm, almost no clouds in the sky, the midnight sun is shining and the light conditions are perfect.

On my way back, I think of all the other trips that I’ve done to the top of Lyngberget. Quite often it was windy and in winter time it was freezing cold and dark or both of it. But the view over Kirkenes was always unique and this was definitely not my last trip to the top of Lyngberget.
